Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a federally funded program established to promote student excellence and achievement and to recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence.

In Michigan, this merit program provides approximately 240 awards per year for up to four years to graduating high school students who have achieved superior academic records. The financial resources of the family will not be a criterion for determining eligibilty. The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship and all other federal financial aid for which the scholar qualifies cannot exceed the cost of attendance. The current annual maximum award is $1500.

The selection of scholarship recipients is coordinated with the Academic All-State Team Program, administered by the Michigan Asociation of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) in cooperation with the Detroit Free Press. In this particular program, each high school principal in the state is requested to nominate an outstanding senior, based upon high school academic achievement and college aptitude test scores. These nomination forms are shared with the Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority for selection of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship recipients. The federal law requires that initial awards be geographically distributed within each state.

If Congress continues to appropriate funds, awards are automatically renewed if: 1) the student maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by the college, 2) the student attends full-time, 3) the total amount of federal financial assistance received does not exceed the cost of attendance, and 4) the student attends an eligible institution.
