Leading scholarships are offered to incoming students with exemplary leadership attributes and outstanding scholarly achievement.

The opportunity—These scholarships are for new Michigan freshmen enrolling in fall 2009. Leading scholarships are offered to incoming students with exemplary leadership attributes and outstanding scholarly achievement. Candidates must be nominated by one or more of their teachers or advisors. These scholarships exemplify Michigan Tech's best, and those selected will be invited for a campus visit on December 7 and 8 for personal and professional appraisal. A minimum of twenty-five finalists will be invited to participate in this prestigious event.

The value—The scholarships are equivalent to regular full-time tuition, plus room and board, plus a stipend of $1000 each year. The approximate value for academic year 2008-2009, is $18,000.

Number of awards—Three students are chosen for each incoming freshman class. All other finalists who participate in the program on Dec 7 and 8 will receive an $8,000 Presidential Leading Scholars Scholarship, renewable for four years.

Length—The awards are for four years (eight semesters). Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.25 cumulative Grade Point Average to have the award renewed for the second, third, and fourth years. Recipients receiving an $8,000 scholarship must maintain a minumum cgpa of 2.50 for renewal.

Qualifications—The awards are made to superior students from Michigan who have demonstrated extremely high academic achievement and potential for excellence in any program of study that is available at Michigan Tech.

Deadline for nominations—October 15th, 2008.

Determination of Award: Selection of finalists will be made by the University Scholarship Committee by November 15th. Award recipients will be selected by January 1.
